What is Matrescence?

Becoming a mother changes everything. There's a word for it.

Throughout this site I use the word "mother" because matrescence is rooted in the experience of that particular transformation. But I warmly welcome all families, whether you are a single parent, same-sex partners, a non-binary parent, or a family that doesn't fit a neat description. You are welcome here. My support is for anyone navigating the profound early weeks of new parenthood.

Becoming a mother changes everything, and yet so little of that change is ever talked about. There is a word for what you are going through: matrescence. A profound transformation (physical, emotional, hormonal, psychological) that happens when a woman becomes a mother. As significant as adolescence, yet rarely acknowledged by the world around you.

I thought it would be easier. I am a healthcare professional; I know how to care for people, how to stay calm under pressure. And yet when I had my own son, I was still completely caught off guard. I found myself searching for the person I used to be, wondering when she would come back. She didn't come back. Someone new emerged instead. And slowly I came to understand that this wasn't loss. This was matrescence.

You might feel joy and grief at the same time. You might love your baby deeply while quietly mourning a version of yourself that feels out of reach. You might feel pressure to cope, to recover, to be grateful, while something far more complex is happening underneath.

This is not a weakness. This is not failure. You are not going back to who you were. You are becoming someone new. That process deserves to be witnessed, supported, and held with real gentleness.

This is at the heart of everything I offer. Not just practical help for your baby, but a genuine presence for you, through one of the most profound transformations of your life.
